Council cracks
down on untidy gardens
CASTLE Point is cracking down on
untidy properties and targeting the
worst offenders.
Castle Point Borough Council set up the
untidy sites team to tackle neglected
houses and gardens in the borough.
Summer is the busiest season for the
team, which is currently working closely
with the environment policy development
group (PDG) to identify and deal with
the worst cases.
Cllr Dave Cross, chairman of the PDG,
said: “Neglected properties can really
bring down an area, so we are working
hard to make sure something gets done
about them. “We have asked the Untidy
Sites Team to focus their efforts on the
most visible properties and those
causing environmental problems. With
this focused approach, we can get
positive results and hopefully improve
the appearance of the local area.”
Sites in Cedar Road, Canvey Island, and
in Sandown Road, Thundersley, have
already been tackled by the team and
show marked improvements.
Current hotspots in Philmead Road,
Benfleet, and in Holbek Road, Canvey
Island, are being investigated to try to
resolve longstanding problem sites

More
tree planting ......
On Saturday 14th February 2009, some of
our green-fingered members of the Canvey
Island Horticultural Society joined with
town councillors to plant 1000 new trees
around the perimeter of the Waterside
Farm allotment site on the west side of
the Island. Although very small at the
moment, it is planned that this planting
will in time form a green barrier
between the Castle Point Golf Course and
the allotments providing habitat for
wildlife and preventing access to the
site by vandals.
The Town Council was fortunate in
gaining the trees through the Essex
County Council Tree Initiative Scheme. |

Town Centre Enhancements
The Council is working towards a number
of enhancements in the town centre
including replacement lamp columns, more
floral displays, improved festive
decorations and railing painting (in
partnership with the Southend Probation
Service). The first installation of new
lamp columns will be completed in
January 2009 and hanging baskets will be
put in place on the new columns during
the summer of 2009. The probation
service is working with the Council to
improve the appearance of street
furniture in the town centre. A
programme of railing painting started in
September 2008 with all the galvanised
railings in the town being painted
black. The Council provides the
materials for this work but the labour
is supplied through the use of
individuals carrying out community
service orders.
Town Centre Planters
In October 2008, the Council purchased
six steel hexagonal planters to brighten
up the Town Centre in Furtherwick Road.
The planters are the first of a planned
phased scheme across the Island with
more planters planned for next year. The
Council is grateful to the Canvey Supply
Co. for taking delivery of the planters
and offloading them into their final
resting places. |

Town Centre Christmas Festivities
Saturday 29th November 2008 was a day of
fun and Christmas festivities on the
Island. A new 20’ tree in the town
centre was erected by the Town Council
outside Canvey Library and the community
were entertained from 1pm with a variety
of events held in the Knightswick
Shopping Centre, inside and outside the
Library and around the town.
Shoppers in
the Knightswick Mall looked on as
Kimberlyn, winner of an Essex talent
competition, performers from Star
Performing Arts school and children from
Winter Gardens primary school sang and
danced to the large crowd that gathered.
Street entertainers amazed on-lookers
with their stilt walking and juggling
abilities and many people, including
Council staff and members of the Rotary
Club seized the opportunity to get
dressed up for the day.
Canvey Library
staff were also dressed for the occasion
in traditional pantomime costumes.
Families were welcomed to join in the
special afternoon of Christmas stories,
quizzes and competitions that had been
laid on by the library staff.
Outside,
the Thundersley Brass Band braved the
elements to provide an hour and a half’s
excellent musical backdrop to the
festivities, playing Santa in on his
sleigh to light up the tree at 5pm. A
crowd of about 400 people gathered to
greet Santa and his elves as they
arrived in the High Street. A fun and
festive afternoon was had by all and the
Council was grateful for the assistance
received from the following
organizations and individuals without
which the event could not have been
organized:
-
The Knightswick Centre
-
Essex
County Council Library Staff
-
The Canvey
Rotary Club
-

-

-

July 2008
First Aid
Training
When the Council heard that the UK was
the only country in Europe which did not
deliver first aid training to school
children as part of the school
curriculum, councillors and the Thames
Ambulance Service saw an opportunity to
work with the Island’s schools to put
this right. A pilot scheme was delivered
to all year 7 pupils at Castle View
School over two days in July 2008. The
two hour sessions covered topics such as
dealing with wounds and bleeds, the
recovery position, the role of the
emergency services and resuscitation.
The children were asked for feedback on
the day and made the following comments:
‘informative’, ‘interesting’, ’learnt a
lot’ and ‘it was better than lessons
(!)’ The Town Council hopes that
following the success of the ‘pilot’
scheme, the partnership between it, the
Thames Ambulance Service and the three
secondary schools on the Island can be
strengthened further to enable further
children to benefit from this
potentially life-saving training. As
Bill Dudbridge, Owner of Thames
Ambulance, pointed out to the children
‘Canvey is an Island. It can only be
accessed by two busy and often congested
roads. If there are no ambulances on the
Island when a member of your family or
your friend needs one what would you do?
Could you make a difference? Could you
save their life?’ |

Tree Planting – Tewkes Creek
On the 8th and 9th February 2008, more
than 200 members of the community turned
out to take part in the largest tree
planting event the Island has ever seen.
With the help of local people and
children from Winter Gardens Junior
School, Castle View School and Little
Tewkes Nursery, over 1500 trees were
planted between the north side of Tewkes
Creek and the old sea wall. The £11,000
scheme was funded partly by a £5000
grant from Essex County Council with the
remaining cost being met by the Town
Council. The second and final phase of
this scheme is planned for the autumn of
2008 when the outcome of a further grant
application for an additional 1000 trees
to Essex County Council will be known.

the Council’s chosen name for the new
woodland – ‘Creeky Woods’. |
