Town Centre Christmas Festivities 2008
|
Saturday
29th November 2008 was a day of fun and
Christmas festivities on the Island. A
new 20’ tree in the town centre was
erected by the Town Council outside
Canvey Library and the community were
entertained from 1pm with a variety of
events held in the Knightswick Shopping
Centre, inside and outside the Library
and around the town.
Shoppers in the Knightswick Mall looked
on as Kimberlyn, winner of an Essex
talent competition, performers from Star
Performing Arts school and children from
Winter Gardens primary school sang and
danced to the large crowd that gathered.
Street entertainers amazed on-lookers
with their stilt walking and juggling
abilities and many people, including
Council staff and members of the Rotary
Club seized the opportunity to get
dressed up for the day.
Canvey Library staff were also dressed
for the occasion in traditional
pantomime costumes. Families were
welcomed to join in the special
afternoon of Christmas stories, quizzes
and competitions that had been laid on
by the library staff.
Outside, the Thundersley Brass Band
braved the elements to provide an hour
and a half’s excellent musical backdrop
to the festivities, playing Santa in on
his sleigh to light up the tree at 5pm.
A crowd of about 400 people gathered to
greet Santa and his elves as they
arrived in the High Street. A fun and
festive afternoon was had by all and the
Council was grateful for the assistance
received from the following
organizations and individuals without
which the event could not have been
organized:
-
The Knightswick Centre
-
Essex County Council Library Staff
-
The Canvey Rotary Club
-
Sainsbury’s (Canvey Island)
-
Star Performing Arts School
-
Winter Gardens Primary school
-

Tree Planting – Tewkes Creek
On the 8th and 9th February 2008, more than 200
members of the community turned out to take part
in the largest tree planting event the Island
has ever seen. With the help of local people and
children from Winter Gardens Junior School,
Castle View School and Little Tewkes Nursery,
over 1500 trees were planted between the north
side of Tewkes Creek and the old sea wall. The
£11,000 scheme was funded partly by a £5000
grant from Essex County Council with the
remaining cost being met by the Town Council.
The second and final phase of this scheme is
planned for the autumn of 2008 when the outcome
of a further grant application for an additional
1000 trees to Essex County Council will be
known.

First Aid Training
When the Council heard that the UK was the only
country in Europe which did not deliver first
aid training to school children as part of the
school curriculum, councillors and the Thames
Ambulance Service saw an opportunity to work
with the Island’s schools to put this right. A
pilot scheme was delivered to all year 7 pupils
at Castle View School over two days in July
2008. The two hour sessions covered topics such
as dealing with wounds and bleeds, the recovery
position, the role of the emergency services and
resuscitation. The children were asked for
feedback on the day and made the following
comments: ‘informative’, ‘interesting’, ’learnt
a lot’ and ‘it was better than lessons (!)’
The Town Council hopes that following the
success of the ‘pilot’ scheme, the partnership
between it, the Thames Ambulance Service and the
three secondary schools on the Island can be
strengthened further to enable further children
to benefit from this potentially life-saving
training. As Bill Dudbridge, Owner of Thames
Ambulance, pointed out to the children
‘Canvey is an Island. It can only be accessed
by two busy and often congested roads. If there
are no ambulances on the Island when a member of
your family or your friend needs one what would
you do? Could you make a difference? Could you
save their life?’
